Offbook is a line learning app for actors. Upload your script and choose your role. AI voices read every other character out loud, and Offbook listens for your line before it plays the next cue.

## What is an AI line learner?

An AI line learner is an app that plays the rest of the scene for you while you say your own lines out loud. You rehearse the way you will perform: you hear a cue, you answer it, and the scene keeps moving.

Offbook does this with the script you already have. It reads your PDF, finds each character and their lines, and gives every other character an AI voice. When it is your turn, it listens through your microphone. When you finish your line, it plays the next cue. There is nothing to tap between lines and nobody to record first.

That is the main difference from older line learning apps, where you type or record every line yourself before you can practice. With Offbook you can go from fresh sides to your first full run in a few minutes.

## How the Offbook line learning app works

From PDF to off book in four steps

1. **Upload your script.** Add a PDF (up to 50 pages), photos or screenshots of the pages, a .txt file, or paste the text. Offbook finds each character, their lines, and the stage directions.
2. **Pick your role and voices.** Choose the part you play. Smart match gives every other character an AI voice. Preview any voice and change it before you start.
3. **Run the scene out loud.** Press Spacebar to start. Offbook plays the other lines, highlights yours, and listens. When you finish your line, the next cue plays.
4. **Take the script away.** As the words stick, hide your lines, switch to first-letter cues, then hide the whole script. If you can run it clean, you are off book.

## Memorization tools that take you from script in hand to off book

You learn a line when you have to pull it from memory. These tools remove the text one step at a time.

- **Hide your lines:** Your dialogue disappears while everyone else's stays on screen, so you recall each line from the cue.
- **First-letter and first-word cues:** Replace your lines with the first letters of each word, or only the first word of each line. You get a nudge, not the answer.
- **Hide the entire script:** The final test: no text at all, only your scene partner's voice.
- **Listen mode:** Hear the whole scene read aloud, your lines included, to absorb its rhythm before you drill.
- **Scene looping:** The scene starts again by itself when it ends, so you can run it back to back without touching the keyboard.
- **Forgiving line detection:** Detection is forgiving by default. Make it stricter as you get close to word perfect.

A progression that works for many actors: run the full script, then first letters with three letters per word, then one letter per word, then hidden lines. Drop a level whenever you can run the scene cleanly. Finish with the whole script hidden.

## More than a line reader

### Control the pace of every cue

Set a default playback speed for the AI voices, or set one line anywhere from 0.5× to 2×. Add a pause of 0.5 to 5 seconds before any line to hold a beat. Turn on auto-advance so the scene moves on after 1 to 6 seconds of silence. Press Enter or say “next line” to move on by hand.

### Handle stage directions your way

Offbook keeps stage directions apart from dialogue. Skip them, have a narrator voice read them, show them on screen without sound, or show them and hold the scene so you can play the action before the next line.

### Edit the scene and the delivery

Fix a line the upload got wrong, add or delete lines, or delete everything above or below a line to cut a full script down to your sides. Want a cue read a certain way? Regenerate the audio, or use Voice Clone to record that line in your own voice.

### Ask Genie about the scene

Genie is Offbook's script assistant. It reads your script and answers questions about motivation, subtext, beats, and pronunciation. Click a line to ask about it, or hover a word to look it up.

## Who uses an AI line learner?

- **Actors with sides due tomorrow.** Upload tonight and run the scene until it sticks.
- **Theater actors learning a full role.** Upload the play in parts, by act or by scene, and work through them with looping and hidden lines.
- **Drama students.** Run class scenes and monologues between rehearsals. Students and educators get 50% off with a .edu email.
- **Self-tapers.** Learn the scene, then use the same AI voices as your reader on tape. See [how to self tape without a reader](https://www.offbook.com/self-tape-without-reader).

## What to look for in a line learning app

There are many apps that help actors learn lines. Before you pick one, ask these questions:

1. **Does it start from your script?** Some apps need you to type or record every line. Offbook reads a PDF, image, or text file and sets up the scene for you.
2. **Does it wait for you?** A recording plays on a timer. Offbook listens and plays the next cue only when you finish your line.
3. **Can it take the text away gradually?** Look for hidden lines, first-letter cues, and a way to hide the whole script.
4. **Can you shape the read?** Speed, pauses, and voice choice matter when a cue needs to land at the right moment.
5. **Where can you use it?** With Offbook, you rehearse on your laptop with the full script on a big screen, and listen to your scenes on your phone anywhere.
6. **Can you try it first?** Offbook has a 7-day free trial on every plan.

## Tips for rehearsing with an AI line learner

- Shape any cue to fit the moment. The AI voices read from the text, and per-line speed, pauses, regenerated audio, or Voice Clone let you set exactly how a cue lands.
- Keep a quick key handy for one-word lines. On a short line like “Yes.” or “Oh?”, you can say “next line” or press Enter to move on at once.
- Rehearse as often as you like. Generating new AI audio uses a monthly allowance (50,000 characters on Starter, 100,000 on Pro, and 200,000 on Premium), and rehearsing a scene whose audio already exists uses none of it.

## AI line learner FAQ

### What is the best AI line learning app?

For most actors, Offbook. Upload your script as a PDF, photos of the pages, or pasted text, choose your role, and AI voices read every other part. Offbook listens while you say your line and plays the next cue when you finish, and it hides your lines step by step as you get off book. Rehearse on your laptop with the full script on a big screen, and listen to your scenes on your phone anywhere. Our guide to line learning apps compares the main options.

### How does an AI line learner help me memorize lines?

It lets you practice the way you perform. You hear a cue, you say your line out loud, and the scene continues. Offbook lets you repeat that as many times as you want, and then removes your text in stages, from full lines to first letters to nothing, until you no longer need it.

### Do I have to say every line word for word?

No. Line detection is forgiving by default. In Scene Controls you can choose Strict, Lenient with a leniency slider, or Manual, where Offbook only moves on when you press Enter, click Next, or say "next line".

### What script formats can I upload?

PDF files up to 50 pages, JPG or PNG images (several at once for multi-page scripts), .txt files, or pasted text up to about 10,000 words. For a Word document, export it to PDF first.

### Can I use Offbook on my phone?

Yes. Rehearse out loud on your laptop with the full script on a big screen, and listen to your scenes on your phone anywhere. Rehearsing with the microphone works in a laptop or desktop browser, Mac or Windows, and we recommend Chrome. An iPhone app is coming soon.

### How much does Offbook cost?

Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial, and a card is required. After the trial, Starter is $9.99/mo, Pro is $14.99/mo, and Premium is $29.99/mo. Annual billing starts at $7.99/mo. Students and educators get 50% off with a valid .edu email.
