Line learning apps cost anywhere from nothing to about $45 a month. Our pick, Offbook, is $9.99 a month, or $7.99 a month billed annually, after a 7-day free trial, and realistic voices read every other part. One-time apps run $3.99 to $29.99; with most of them you record the other characters' lines yourself, and Script Rehearser reads them with computer voices. Apps that read the cues for you and listen for the end of your line mostly cost $6.99 to $12.99 a month, or roughly $59 to $96 a year on an annual plan. A third group charges by use: day passes, per-scene tokens, or prepaid credits.

The sticker price is the easy part. What a plan limits (pages, auditions, scenes, or generated audio), whether the App Store charges more than the website, and how many months you will actually use it change the real cost a lot. Below, every app is judged the same way, with our pick first.

## How We Compared the Prices

Every app below is measured on the same four things, taken from its own pricing page or its US App Store listing in October 2026.

1. **The real cost of a year.** The lowest yearly price for the entry plan, or twelve months of the monthly price when no yearly plan is listed.
2. **What the plan limits.** Some plans are unlimited. Others count pages, auditions, scenes, tokens, credits, or characters of generated audio.
3. **Who reads the cues.** Your own recordings, computer voices, or AI voices. If you record every cue, you pay in hours instead of dollars.
4. **How you can try it.** A free tier, a free trial, or nothing before you pay.

## Our Pick

### Offbook ($9.99 a month)

Offbook runs in a laptop or desktop browser. Upload a PDF, photos of the pages, a text file, or pasted text, and realistic voices read every other part. It listens through your microphone and plays the next cue when you finish your line. Hide your lines, switch to first-letter cues, or loop a scene while you learn it.

Starter is $9.99 a month, Pro $14.99, and Premium $29.99, or $7.99, $11.99, and $23.99 a month billed annually, after a 7-day free trial. There is no cap on how many scripts you upload; each plan includes a monthly allowance for generating new audio (50,000 characters on Starter). Students and educators get 50% off any paid plan with a .edu email. **Best for:** full roles and frequent auditions, from the script you already have.

## One-Time Purchase Apps

Pay once and keep it. These have the lowest sticker prices, and none of them listens for the end of your line. With LineLearner and Rehearsal Pro you record the cues yourself, so the real price is your time: every line of every other character, again after each rewrite. Script Rehearser reads them with computer voices instead.

### LineLearner ($3.99)

[LineLearner](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/id368070258) is $3.99 once on iPhone, iPad, and Apple silicon Macs, with no in-app purchases, and $5.49 on Android. You record every line, then play the scene with your part turned off. A free lite version handles up to 10 lines. **Best for:** a one-time price, if you will record every cue.

### Rehearsal Pro ($19.99)

[Rehearsal Pro](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/rehearsal-pro/id1116896197) is $19.99 once, with no in-app purchases, on iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, and Vision Pro. Import PDFs or photograph pages, highlight lines in colors, and record cues yourself. It works offline. **Best for:** marking up a script on an iPad without a subscription.

### Script Rehearser Pro ($29.99 once, or $7.99 a year)

[Script Rehearser](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/script-rehearser/id1441908800) is free to download, and computer voices read the other parts. Pro is $7.99 a year or $29.99 once, and adds your own recordings and a voice per character. The 30-day Pro trial needs no sign-up and does not turn into a paid plan. Note the math: the one-time upgrade costs the same as nearly four years of the annual plan. **Best for:** computer voices on a yearly or one-time price.

## Flat Monthly and Yearly Subscriptions

A flat subscription charges the same whether you learn one scene or a whole play. These apps read the other parts for you, with your recordings, computer voices, or AI voices, and most of them listen for the end of your line before they play the next cue.

### Counterpart ($6.99 a month)

[Counterpart Studio](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/counterpart-learn-lines-tape/id6755987894) is $6.99 a month or $58.99 a year on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It listens for a cue word, and the reader can be your recording, a friend's, or AI text-to-speech. **Best for:** a subscription on Apple devices.

### Scriptmate ($9.99 a month)

[Scriptmate Pro](https://scriptmateapp.com/) is $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year after a 7-day free trial, with no account needed. It is an iPhone app that follows your line with on-device speech recognition. **Best for:** iPhone users who want a reader that works offline.

### Line Learner AI ($12.99 a month)

[Line Learner AI](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/line-learner-ai/id6738027914) (a different app from LineLearner) is $12.99 a month or $69.99 a year on iPhone and Apple silicon Macs. The yearly plan costs about five and a half months of the monthly price. **Best for:** iPhone users ready to commit to a year.

### coldRead ($10.99 a month)

[coldRead](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/coldread/id1264354117) is free for scripts up to 8 lines. Unlimited is $10.99 for a month, $26.99 for 3 months, or $83.99 for a year, after a 1-week trial. You record every line in your own voice, and it plays the next when you say the last word of yours. **Best for:** a 3-month plan to cover one show.

### Acting Pal ($9.99 a month)

[Acting Pal](https://actingpal.com/) is $9.99 a month after a 3-day free trial, on iPhone, iPad, and Android. The plan includes up to 60 pages of sides a month. AI voices read the cues, and Cue mode plays the next line when you finish. **Best for:** short sides on a phone.

### Scriptation ($100 a year)

[Scriptation](https://www.scriptation.com/pricing) is a script app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Its Playback Mode can read the other parts while you play your character, and its "On voice" cue setting waits for you to finish your line. Rehearsing is part of Industry Pro, $100 a year on the website, with a 14-day trial and a free tier of 3 documents. **Best for:** actors who already mark up their scripts in Scriptation.

## Pay-Per-Use: Passes, Tokens, Auditions, and Credits

These apps charge for how much you use them. That can be the cheapest choice for one audition a month and the most expensive for a full play, so count your scenes before you pick.

### Linus (day passes)

[Linus](https://getlinus.app/pricing) sells a 3-day pass for $1.99, with Pro at $9.99 a month and Premium at $19.99. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Android, and the web, and the free tier covers one 1-page scene of up to 10 lines. **Best for:** a single audition this week.

### blablabla (scene packs)

[blablabla](https://sayblablabla.com/pricing) gives you 2 scenes with AI voices for free, then sells packs: 3 scenes for $1.49 or 10 for $4.99. Pro is $69.99 a year (the App Store also lists $6.99 a month). Once audio is generated it works offline. **Best for:** a few scenes a year, paid as you go.

### ScenePartner (auditions per month)

[ScenePartner](https://scenepartner.club/pricing) counts auditions. Free is 3 auditions with scripts up to 10 pages. On the website, Plus is $12.99 a month for 10 auditions and Pro $29.99 for 100. In the App Store the same plans cost $19.99 and $44.99. **Best for:** auditioners who buy on the web.

### Rafy (tokens)

[Rafy](https://rafy.app) charges in tokens, where one token is one scene with unlimited takes: Basic $9.99 a month for 10, Plus $14.99 for 20, Premium $24.99 for 50, or $99, $149, and $249 a year. Each scene can be up to 7 PDF pages. **Best for:** self-tapers who know how many scenes they tape a month.

### ActOnCue (prepaid credit)

[ActOnCue](https://actoncue.com/pricing) runs on credit. The free tier includes $1 of test credit; $10 a month buys $15 of credit, and $99 a year buys $180. Rehearsing with your own recorded voice is free. **Best for:** people who like to see exactly what each scene costs. See our [ActOnCue alternative](https://www.offbook.com/actoncue-alternative) page.

## Four Things That Change What You Really Pay

### Monthly or yearly

A yearly plan only saves money if you would have paid for more months than it costs. Divide the yearly price by the monthly price to find the break-even point. Scriptmate's year costs 7 months of its monthly plan ($69.99 against $9.99); Counterpart's about 8.4 months ($58.99 against $6.99). If you only need an app for one show, a month or two of the monthly plan, or coldRead's 3-month plan, is cheaper.

### App Store or website

The same plan can cost more inside the app. ScenePartner's Plus plan is $12.99 a month on its website and $19.99 in the App Store, which adds up to $84 over a year. Before you subscribe on your phone, check the app's own pricing page.

### What the plan counts

"Unlimited" rarely means the same thing twice. Acting Pal includes up to 60 pages of sides a month, ScenePartner counts auditions, Rafy counts scenes, and ActOnCue counts credit. A full-length play can use up a page or scene allowance quickly, so match the limit to the work: one audition side a week, or a whole role over a rehearsal period.

### Your own time

LineLearner and Rehearsal Pro are cheap because you do the reading. For a two-page side, recording the cues takes minutes. For a full role, it can take hours, plus a new take after every rewrite. If you are learning a long part, put a value on that time before you compare $3.99 with $9.99 a month.

## Is a Paid Line Learning App Worth It?

A paid plan earns its price as soon as you learn long roles, audition every week, or want a reader that waits for you instead of a fixed gap. Whatever you pay, the app only helps if it makes you recall the lines rather than reread them: testing yourself beats rereading, as Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke showed in a [2006 memory study](https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1467-9280.2006.01693.x).

So use a trial on real work, starting with Offbook's 7-day free trial. Load the scene you actually need to learn, run it three days in a row with your lines hidden, and cancel anything you did not open again. You can also make first-letter cues for any speech with our [free first-letter tool](https://www.offbook.com/tools/first-letter-memorizer), or time an audition piece from [our monologue library](https://www.offbook.com/monologues) with the [monologue timer](https://www.offbook.com/tools/monologue-timer).

## Questions Actors Ask

### What is the cheapest line learning app?

Offbook starts with a 7-day free trial and then costs $7.99 a month billed annually, and students and educators get 50% off any paid plan with a valid .edu email. That price includes realistic voices for every other part, so you record nothing. LineLearner is $3.99 once on iPhone, and Script Rehearser is free, with a Pro plan for $7.99 a year; with those, you record the cues or accept computer voices with no listening for your line.

### Which line learning apps have a free trial?

Offbook (7 days), Script Rehearser Pro (30 days, no sign-up), Scriptmate (7 days), coldRead (1 week), and Acting Pal (3 days). Linus, ScenePartner, blablabla, and coldRead also have small free tiers that do not expire.

### Is there a student discount on line learning apps?

Offbook gives students and educators 50% off any paid plan with a valid .edu email. Script Rehearser offers free Pro access to schools through offer codes.

### Should I pay monthly or yearly?

Yearly if you act all year: most yearly plans cost 5 to 10 months of the monthly price. Monthly, or a short pass, if you need help with one show or one audition.

## The Verdict

Go back to the four questions: the real cost of a year, what the plan limits, who reads the cues, and how you can try it. For most actors, the best value is Offbook, starting with its 7-day free trial.

- **Nothing to record.** Realistic voices read every other part from the script you upload, so a full role costs the same setup as a two-page side.
- **No counting.** No per-scene tokens, audition counts, or cap on how many scripts you upload, from $7.99 a month billed annually.
- **Half price for students.** 50% off any paid plan with a .edu email, for students and educators.

Rehearse on your laptop with the full script on a big screen, and listen to your scenes on your phone anywhere.
