## The setup flow

After your script is processed, Offbook walks you through a short setup:

1. **Project title:** confirm or rename your scene (it defaults to the file name).
2. **Microphone test:** say a few words so we can confirm your mic is working. This step completes automatically once we hear you clearly.
3. **Speaker test:** we play a short sound and ask if you heard it.

If you've already completed the mic and speaker tests before, we skip them.

## Choose your role

Next, pick the character **you'll** be playing. Offbook reads everyone else's lines and listens for yours.

**Tip:** You can switch roles anytime. Open **Scene Controls** during practice and pick a different character under "Your Role". Great for running the same scene from the other side.

Want to hear the whole scene before you play a part? Click **Just listen** under the list of roles, and Offbook reads every line out loud, each character in their own voice. (If your script has no speaking roles, the dialog shows **Continue in Listen Mode** instead.)

## Assign voices to the other characters

Every other character in the scene gets an AI voice:

- **Smart match:** Offbook reads your script and matches a voice to each character. You can change any voice before you confirm.
- **Pick manually:** browse the voice library and tap the play button to preview any voice before choosing it.

Free and Starter accounts cast from 12 voices. Pro casts from 500 voices, and Premium from the full library of 1,000. See [AI voices & audio](https://www.offbook.com/help-center/guides/voices-and-audio) for details.

## Missing a character?

If the AI missed someone (or you want to add a reader for stage directions), click **Add New Character**, type the character's name, choose a voice, and their lines can be added from the scene editor.
