How to use the first letter method

  1. Read the full text a few times and make sure you understand every thought before you try to memorize it.
  2. Paste the text above with one sentence or one line of verse per row.
  3. Start with two or three letters per word. Say each line out loud from the cues, then click it to check.
  4. When a line is right twice in a row, drop to one letter per word, then to the first word only.
  5. Switch to Hidden and say the whole piece from memory. Click any line you miss and drill it again.

Why it works

Reading a line again and again feels productive, but your eyes do the work, not your memory. The first letter of each word is too little to read and enough to recall. Each time you rebuild the line from the letters, you practice the thing you need on stage: pulling the exact words out of memory.

The letters also lock in exact wording. When you are close but not word perfect, the cue for a word you changed will not match what you said, and you notice the slip before it turns into a habit.

Lines with a scene partner

A cue sheet trains your lines in isolation. In a scene you also need to answer your partner's line on time. In Offbook, the same first-letter cues sit inside the scene: AI voices read the other characters, and Offbook listens and gives you the next cue when you finish your line. See the memorization tools guide for how it works. To drill the handoffs on paper first, the cue script maker lists only your lines, each under the last words of the speech before it. To hear those cues out loud, the run lines online tool reads the other parts in your browser and waits for your line.

Questions

What is the first letter method for memorizing lines?

You replace each word of a line with its first letter, so "To be, or not to be" becomes "T b, o n t b". You then say the full line out loud from those letters. The letters stop you from reading the line, but they give your memory enough of a hint to recall the exact words.

Should I use one letter or more per word?

Start with more help and remove it as the lines stick. Two or three letters per word is a gentle first step. One letter per word is harder. When you can say a line correctly from one letter per word, try the first word only, then hide the line.

Is my script saved or uploaded anywhere?

No. This tool runs in your browser. The text you paste is not sent to Offbook or stored on a server, and it is gone when you close the page.

Does this work for monologues and songs?

Yes. The method works for any text you must say word for word: monologues, verse, speeches, and lyrics. Put each sentence or each line of verse on its own row so the cues follow the shape of the text.
