No reader tonight? Open Offbook on your laptop next to your camera. It reads every other role out loud and waits for you to finish each line, while you record with your usual setup.
To tape a scene alone, you need something that says the other lines at the right moment. Actors have tried a lot of fixes: recording the lines on a voice memo and leaving gaps, pasting the scene into a text-to-speech app, or calling a friend at 11 p.m. Each one works until the timing goes wrong.
Offbook solves the timing. Upload your sides, choose your role, and AI voices read every other character. Offbook listens through your computer's microphone, so the next cue plays when you finish your line, not after a fixed gap. Take your time and it waits. Pick up the pace and it keeps up.
You keep your own camera setup and film in the quality you choose. Offbook is the reader standing beside the lens, available whenever your tape is due.
From sides in your inbox to a finished take
Add the PDF, photos of the pages, or pasted text. If you got a full script, delete everything above and below your scene to trim it to your sides.
Choose who you play. Each other character gets an AI voice. Preview them and pick one that is clear and easy to listen to.
Run the scene with your lines hidden until you no longer need the page. Rehearsal and taping use the same scene.
Start your camera, step onto your mark, and start the scene. Offbook reads each cue and waits for you to finish your line.
A few settings make the difference between a reader that helps the tape and one that gets in the way.
Just off to the side of the lens. Your eyeline goes there, not to the screen. A small piece of tape next to the lens gives you a mark to play to.
Your camera records the laptop speakers too. Casting should hear the cue, but your voice should be clearly louder. Record a test and play it back.
Keep stage directions on Hidden so a narrator does not read them on tape. Use Silent with pause if you need time to play an action.
Add a pause of 0.5 to 5 seconds before a cue so the reader does not jump on your moment. You can also set any line's speed from 0.5× to 2×.
If a short line is not picked up, auto-advance moves the scene on after 1 to 6 seconds of silence. Set it longer than your longest planned pause.
If a cue sounds wrong, regenerate it or try another voice. For one line that must land a certain way, use Voice Clone to record it yourself.

It is there when the tape is due. Sides often arrive the night before. You do not have to find someone who is free, awake, and willing.
Take ten is the same as take one. The reader gives the same read every time, so the only thing changing between takes is you.
Rehearsal and taping happen in one place. The scene you used to learn the lines is the scene that reads with you on camera.

“Got sides last minute while I was traveling. I didn't have anyone to run with, so I rehearsed on the app in my hotel room. By the end, I felt ready to tape.”

Yes. You need something that delivers the other lines on cue. Offbook does that with AI voices: upload your sides, pick your role, and it reads every other character out loud and waits for you to finish each line while you record.
No. Offbook is your reader. You record with your usual setup, such as a phone or camera on a tripod, while Offbook runs on a laptop or desktop next to it.
Yes. Your camera picks up the reader from the laptop speakers, the same as a human reader off camera. Keep the volume lower than your own voice and check a test recording before you start your takes.
Just to the side of the lens, where a reader would stand, unless the casting instructions say otherwise. Put a small mark there and play the scene to it, not to the laptop screen.
Yes. Offbook waits for you to finish each line. You can also add a pause before any cue, change the speed of any line, and choose how stage directions are handled.
A laptop or desktop with a microphone and a browser (we recommend Chrome) for the reader, the camera or phone you already film with, and a plan or 7-day free trial. Out-loud rehearsal runs on the computer, and on your phone you can listen to the scene before you tape.
