Offbook vs WeAudition at a glance

Both give you someone to read the other lines. One is a person, the other is AI. Here is how that plays out.

Live reader or AI reader: what changes?

A live reader is another actor. They react to what you give them and bring their own energy to each session.

The tradeoff is logistics. A live session depends on who is available, runs on a clock, and may cost money each time. Each reader also brings a different read, which keeps things fresh but can make takes harder to compare.

An AI reader removes those tradeoffs. It is ready at 2 a.m., gives the same read on take ten as on take one, and will run one page forty times while you work on a single moment. Because the read stays steady, you can compare takes and see exactly what you changed.

For rehearsing, learning lines, and taping on short notice, an AI reader is the faster and more reliable choice. Offbook covers the whole job: learn the lines, run the scene as many times as you need, then set it beside your camera to read the cues for the tape.

Why Offbook is the stronger choice

No one to book

Your reader is ready the moment you open a scene, at any hour. There is no session clock and no one waiting on you.

Starts from your PDF

Upload the sides you would send a reader. Offbook finds the characters and their lines and gives each one an AI voice.

It waits for your line

Speech recognition hears you finish, then plays the next cue. Take as long as the moment needs.

Built for learning lines

Hide your lines, use first-letter cues, loop the scene, and hide the whole script when you think you know it.

You shape the read

Set the speed of any line, add pauses before cues, regenerate a read, or record a line yourself with Voice Clone.

Ask about the script

Genie reads your scene and answers questions about motivation, subtext, beats, and pronunciation.

Who Offbook is for

Offbook is the better pick for most actors. Choose Offbook over WeAudition if you:

  • Want a reader at any hour without booking anyone
  • Need to learn the lines, not only tape them
  • Like doing many takes without watching a session clock
  • Rehearse and tape at a laptop or desktop, on Mac or Windows
  • Prefer one monthly price with the reader included

How Offbook works

From sides to rehearsal in a few minutes:

  1. Upload your sides. Add the PDF, photos of the pages, or pasted text. Offbook finds the characters for you.
  2. Pick your role. Choose who you play. AI voices read every other character.
  3. Rehearse or self-tape. Say your line out loud. Offbook hears you finish and plays the next cue.

Self taping with Offbook instead of a booked reader

Set your laptop just to the side of your camera, where a reader would stand. Keep the volume a little lower than your own voice so casting hears the cue but focuses on you. Hide stage directions so a narrator does not read them on tape, and add a pause before any cue where you want a beat.

Then start recording, press Spacebar, and play the scene. Offbook reads each cue and waits for you to finish your line. Restart for the next take. For the full setup, see how to self tape without a reader.

Offbook vs WeAudition: common questions

Is Offbook the same as WeAudition?

No. They are separate products from separate companies. WeAudition connects actors with live human readers over video chat. Offbook uses AI voices to read the other characters in your script, in your laptop or desktop browser.

Does Offbook use real actors as readers?

No. Every other character is read by an AI voice. You choose the voices, and you can shape the read with per-line speed, pauses, regenerated audio, or Voice Clone, which lets you record a line yourself.

Can I use Offbook for self tapes?

Yes. Open Offbook on your laptop next to your camera or phone. It reads the other lines out loud and waits for you to say yours, while you record with your usual setup. Offbook does not record video itself.

Can I use both?

You can, since the tools do not depend on each other. Offbook covers the whole job on its own, though: learn the lines, run the scene as many times as you like, then keep it next to your camera to read the cues for the final tape, with no one to book.

Can I use Offbook on my phone?

Yes. Rehearse out loud on your laptop with the full script on a big screen, and listen to your scenes on your phone anywhere, with your own lines spoken, skipped, or left as silent gaps for you to fill. Rehearsing with the microphone works in a laptop or desktop browser, and an iPhone app is coming soon.

How much does Offbook cost?

Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial, and a card is required. After that, Starter is $9.99/mo, Pro is $14.99/mo, and Premium is $29.99/mo. Annual billing lowers the price, starting at $7.99/mo.
